Basically, we in Chicago are spearheading a new project to spread
awareness<br>
about the huge number of Iraqis dying because of the US/UK occupation
and<br>
sanctions.<br>
<br>
The 100,000 Rings project intends to commemorate the 100,000 Iraqis
killed.<br>
(Even this estimate by The Lancet, which has been called high, is
probably an<br>
underestimate.) The idea is that 100 groups all over the world will
ring a bell<br>
1000 times during October 24-28, with each death symbolizing one
death. The bell<br>
ringing ceremonies will take place in public areas, garnering media
attention<br>
and uniting activists.<br>
<br>
We will ring a bell once every minute, giving the sound time to
reverberate.<br>
Individual groups can work out what time schedule they want to use
to<br>
coordinate their bell ringing.<br>
<br>
At intervals during the bell ringing, some groups will be reading the
names of<br>
Iraqis who are known to have died in the violence. Two websites which
list<br>
names of Iraqi civilians killed in the war are Iraqi Civilian War
Casualties<br>
and Iraq Body Count: 100 Names of Civilians Killed.<br>

If your group chooses to participate, we'll have printed materials you
can hand<br>
out to people who are interested. It is suggested that you choose a
spot for<br>
your ceremony that has a lot of foot traffic. (And is close to a
public<br>
bathroom!)<br>

We hope this project will spread awareness about the enormous number
of Iraqi<br>
deaths, and also call attention to the fact that most, if not all,
estimates of<br>
body counts are gross underestimates.<br>
