Notes for October 29th Coalition. September 15, 2005

Note taker: Jeff O.
Facilitator: Jen

1. Introductions*: Peter, Mark, Jerry, Karen, Cheryl, Maya, Jennifer, Gina, Jeff, Elizabeth, John H., Nikul, Nate, David, Nick, Dan, Jamie, Cristine Amy
2. Meeting time: Last week we decided Thursday. Proposal to have meeting time the same day every week: Monday meetings proposed. Passes unanimously.
3. Committee Reports:
a: Program Committee: Peter. It hasn't met yet. Stresses that this has to happen soon
b: Permit Committee: Karen. Parks Department is giving us the run-around. They said that we were supposed to have applications in last March. No call back from New Parks Department, Arroyo, or Turner's offices yet. John H mentions that Arroyo is committed to this-get him to help us. Mark asks if a permit is really necessary. Yes, due to need for electricity for bands, and sound; need to build broadly means that we need to include people who are not yet willing to be arrested; we want to be able to include immigrants, who wouldn't participate if getting into legal trouble was a possibility.
c: Outreach Committee: Christine. List of new endorsers includes but is not limited to: ACORN, Traprock, etc., (Sorry Christine-you listed them so fast I couldn't jot them down fast enough! There were about a dozen new endorsers. Very impressive!) Mentions that tabling was done at the Galloway event. Meetings were set up with Jobs with Justice, QueerToday.com, etc. Amy C is drafting a contingency letter about how groups can endorse and get involved. Devising a strategy for leafleting (lower income neighborhoods, colleges, etc.) We need flyering volunteers for Hempfest, Cindy Sheehan, Jericho Boston, and Midea Benjamin. Cost of flyers an issue. Need to follow u with Equal Exchanges. Need Speakers for 10/8 fundraising event. Need to get Cindy Sheehan to endorse and announce. Visibility Saturdays a good idea. African American churches should be approached for their endorsements. Chuck Turner/District 7: we may not be able to meet their conditions for endorsement (he wants us to include 50% cut in military budget as a demand, he wants (as do we) more diversity in the coalition.) As a part of this discussion, we voted to restore Hurricane Katrina relief language as a demand, linking it with the Iraq War. A near unanimous vote (1 abstention), but the precise language was left up to a committee that was to discuss it over the weekend. John H would head this up. Another proposal to include language demanding Bush's impeachment and Chuck Turner's military budget demands would have to wait until the Monday meeting due to time constraints.
4. Fundraising/Finances: Nate & Nick. We may have 45 Mount Auburn space for a political poetry fundraiser. Cheryl: may be possible for a classical music event after 10/29 that she could arrange. Maya suggests that we have a fundraising table at Cindy Sheehan event this weekend. Main event will be "Assembling Peace" fundraiser at Spontaneous Celebrations on 10/8. We still need bilingual flyers. Music acts are confirmed. 6pm-1am. $10.00/ticket. Press: we are still waiting for MOB to give us their press list. Jason Pramas will do PSAs he needs the info so they can go out. Possibility of internet event listings and free ads. Arts Committee will do sidewalk art, caravans, etc. Arts committee will meet this Saturday at Nate's place. 280 capacity. Need people to flyer JP. We can't count on a cut of the proceeds from the bar take. Brian is still working on getting us a Bank Account, should be a couple of days more. We passed the hat and raised $63.
5. Media Committee: It still needs to get going!!
6. Announcements: Hugo Chavez in NYC this weekend.
