Dear Friends of the Peace Movement,
As U.S. death toll in Iraq moves toward 2,000 and as the daily horror for
Iraqis continues with the Iraqi death toll over 100,000 and climbing, we
have a choice on speaking out or remaining silent on the war. On October 29
on Boston Common from 11:00am-4:00pm, thousands of people from Boston and
New England will come together to demand an end to the destruction of Iraq
and a new beginning for mutual respect and coexistence of all people.
Now is an urgent time to participate in changing the direction of our
national consciousness. The nation's attention is focusing on military
families that are suffering from this war, mothers like Cindy Sheehan, women
and men in uniform dying for a "cause" they cannot understand, a "cause"
that has lost majority support, a "cause" seen as directed at intimidation
of smaller countries and monopolization of oil resources.
Dozens of Peace and Justice organizations have endorsed this march and rally
and are participating in weekly open meetings to build it. Our meetings grow
larger week by week as seasoned veterans of the peace movement join with
youth and new comers. Student groups, community groups, labor,
immigrant-rights organizations, women's organizations, and political and
cultural groups of all kinds are joining together as the October 29
Coalition.
Rallies before and after a permitted street march will feature brief
speeches by people from across this spectrum of support. Performers will
alternate with speakers. An Arts and Music committee is planning an event
that will feature a striking cultural aspect.
Lacking a major donor base we need to appeal to you directly for support to
make sure the logistics plans have a financial underpinning, to give some
support to members of our small semi-volunteer staff, and to pay for
publicity, which now consists chiefly of leaflets. Please fill out the form
below and give generously to help change the direction of events.
Sincerely,
Brian OConnell
