Sarah:
I wrote to Christina in response to the budget that was distributed
that I did not see ASL interpreters as a line item. She suggested I
write to you and the List with a "proposal" (?) and get the matter put
on the agenda. Not sure what is meant by a proposal: I move that Oct 29
Coalition cpmply with the American Disabliities Act??? Seems a bit
harsh. How about this: I move that the O29 Coalition go on record as
committed to welcoming Deaf activists and Deaf individuals opposed to
the war and make the necessary arrangements to have the speakers
interpreted in American Sign Language.
I can't attend the evening meetings, but this should not require a lot
of motivation on the part of progressive people. If you want to assign
me contacting the appropriate agencies, I am happy to assist.
In the summer at one of the early coalition meetings, I brought up the
issue of access to the Deaf. I mentioned that it was very
disappointing to be at the March ralley and not have it interpreted. I
asked that in drawing up the budget, interpreters be factored in.
I sent an email a week or so ago regarding the program, to once again
remind the organizers of this concern.
Veterans for Peace are always on top of this, ANSWER always has its
rally's interpreted, but the Boston antiwar movement doesn't seem to
take notice of this need. Boston has a large Deaf population and
should feel welcome to the movement.
in solidarity,
Arlene
